In 1999, less than a year after Google appeared for the first time, Lake City Bank offered internet banking to its customers. Only about 26 percent of U.S. households had internet connections at the time, so it took some time for the service to catch on. Customers had to enroll by paper application or telephone; there was no such thing as online registration. Even so, a new era in banking was beginning.
