The Moments that Made Us

On May 14, 2022, Lake City Bank commemorated 150 years since our founding. While much has changed since that first day in 1872, we remain community-focused, community-driven and community-led with the same name on the door.

Dedicated and forward-thinking people have transformed Lake City Bank from a small, private bank with $60,000 in assets to one of the region’s largest locally based financial institutions. Today, our assets total $7.2 billion, a level we have reached not in spite of our community focus, but because of it. We’ve faced opportunities and challenges, and we’ve addressed each one with the sole purpose of doing what was best for our communities. After all, we live here too.

The path from 1872 to today hasn’t always been easy. We’ve weathered world wars, financial crises and global pandemics, but we’ve also celebrated times of positive transformation, growth and prosperity. Our history is filled with colorful moments that mark our path. When woven together, they tell our story. We call them The Moments that Made Us, and we invite you to explore them here.

Lake City Bank Opens Its Doors – May 14, 1872
Federal troops occupied parts of the South in the aftermath of the Civil War, and Union war hero Ulysses S. Grant worked to rebuild the country as president of the United States. Although parts of the U.S. still struggled to recover, the war actually had been good for Indiana’s economy. Postwar rebuilding increased demand for manufactured goods. Hoosiers in almost every sector were thriving, and they needed banks.

The Early Years
Growth Amid Uncertainty
Growth Amid Uncertainty

Nationwide bank panics struck in 1873, 1893 and 1907, threatening to disrupt the country’s banking system, and leading to severe depressions. While many other banks struggled, the actions taken by Lake City Bank’s leadership allowed it to survive and even expand. The first change came in 1875, when James McMurray and the other members of the bank’s board of directors selected 26 charter stockholders to form a private corporation. Further shifts came in 1895 and 1919. Around the time of the first reorganization, Lake City Bank outgrew its original space next to Wynant’s Drug Store and moved to the Indianian building on the south side of Warsaw’s town square.

The Roaring Twenties marked several years of economic expansion for the country, but that came to an end in 1929. The stock market crashed in October, and the banking panics began.

People withdrew their money in droves, afraid their bank would collapse and they’d be left with nothing. This made banks even more unstable; nearly one third ended up failing during this period. Of the five original banks in Warsaw, only Lake City Bank survived.

It took the immense tragedy of World War II to end the Great Depression and put America’s economy back on track. The war effort created millions of new jobs and finally brought the country back to full employment.

Lake City Bank grew in capability and reputation. On December 7, 1940 the bank became a member of the Federal Reserve System and then supported the war effort with bonds and ration banking. By the end of the 1940s, Lake City Bank had sped past its 75th anniversary and continued moving forward.

After World War II, the nation’s economy took off. The United States quickly rose to the position of richest country in the world, and more Americans than ever considered themselves part of the middle class.

The housing boom and increased mobility through better roads and cars meant people were moving, too.

As more money moved through the economy, Lake City Bank expanded too. New buildings, automated processing and creative promotions mark this period of the bank’s history.

The 1970s and 1980s proved difficult times as the economy took a hard turn. Millions of people across the country lost their jobs and prices soared. Though challenging, these years also provided the chance to grow. While many banks abandoned small communities, Lake City Bank moved into them, adding branches, products and systems to better serve customers. It increased its footprint in commercial lending, which broadened its base beyond retail banking. Finally, it formed Lakeland Financial Corporation, a holding company that gave more financial flexibility.
