Scammers Posing as Relatives

Kathy’s heart raced as she picked up the phone and heard a panicked voice on the other end claiming to be her beloved grandson. He said he was in jail and needed money urgently. Kathy asked cautiously, “What’s your name?”

The scammer replied with her grandson’s name, but Kathy knew something wasn’t right. Her grandson was away at baseball camp for the week; she dropped him off a few days ago.

Suspecting foul play, Kathy hung up and contacted her real grandson’s parents, who confirmed he was safe and sound at baseball camp. Relief washed over her, knowing she avoided falling for the scammer’s tactics.

After hanging up, Kathy immediately called Lake City Bank to report the scam. She explained the situation to the representative, detailing the call and how the scammer tried to trick her into sending money. The representative assured her they would monitor her account for any suspicious activity and advised her to be cautious with future calls.
